Abstract

Description

The present study addresses the economic evaluation of the production of synthetic artificial rubies by means of the laser fusion method known as "Laser Heated Pedestal Growth" (LHPG), in contrast to the traditional Verneuil method. The Verneuil method uses a flame composed of hydrocarbon and oxygen to create synthetic rubies, while LHPG uses a directed laser beam to melt cylindrical rods of aluminum oxide and chromium. The text discusses the properties of corundum, the floating zone crystallization technique, and the market for synthetic gems, highlighting the growing demand for sustainable alternatives. Experimental results show that the LHPG method is promising in terms of economic viability, efficiency, and quality of the final product, offering advantages over the Verneuil method. However, further research is needed to optimize the process. The study concludes that LHPG has the potential to transform the synthetic gem industry, driving the diversification of colors and sizes of gems, although it highlights the importance of continuous collaboration and innovation to fully realize this potential.
